Shoot 3

Shoot 3
Circles and Curves

Artist Research;
Man Ray

What Aim To Achieve;

I am to create a collection of abstract photos with bent and contorted pieces of paper. This will show Circles and Curves as the bend of the paper will have tonal indifference and will show the theme clearly.

Contact Sheet;

Best Images

This image is good because the image is very abstract and is akin to the works of Edward Weston Moore in its style. The composition is also very good as you cannot see any of the joins, but also has the tonal variation. To make this image better in editing; I will play with the contrast to get a greater tonal variation and accentuate the abstract nature of the photo.

Images That Require Improvement

This image requires improvement because it is out of focus and you can see where the paper is adjoined by the sellotape, and by the fact it doesn't look abstract. To correct this in future shoots I will use materials like blutac to hide the joins on the paper, i will also make more interesting compositions with the paper and get in at different angles to make it mote abstract.

AO3Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress

AO2; Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops

With the raw photo i start by converting to a .JPG, then from the adjustments tab via the items tab on the window, i choose Black And White, then make the image darker and then up the contrast.

AO1; Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.

AO4; Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

Photographer Research

Edward Weston

Edward Henry Weston was an american photographer, held as ' one of the most innovative and influential photographers of the 20th Century '. Over his 40 year career he photographed; still life, landscapes, nudes, portraits, genre scenes and whimsical photos.

Man Ray

Man Ray was an American born French visual photographer. He was a spearhead in both the Dadaist and Surrealist Movements. He used a multitude of different types of media, but considered himself, above all, a painter. Although, he is remembered for his renowned fashion and portrait photography. He is also famous for his work with photograms or 'rayograms' after himself. These were created by placing objects on top of light sensitive objects, like photogenic paper, then exposing it to harsh light. This creatives a negative shadow image showing a large variety of tone ( shown above ).

László Moholy-Nagy

László Moholy-Nagy (born László Weisz) was a Hungarian painter/ photographer, as well as a professor in Bauhaus School.
He was a influenced strongly by constructivism, an artistic and architectural philosophical train of thought created by Vladimir Tatlin, originating from Russia in 1913. It was the large scale reject of autonomously created art, and instead sighted the 'construction of art'. It was in favour of art as a practise for social purposes.
He was also a massive advocate of integrating technology and industry into The Arts.  A New York Times article called him "relentlessly experimental" because of his pioneering work in painting, drawing, photography, collage, sculpture, film, theater, and writing.

Context ( How Was It Made?)

Due to Laszlo Moholy-Nagy's fondness for the philosophy of construcivitism, the train of thought suggesting art should be for social purposes and shouldn't be automated and mass produced, along with his belief that art should incorporate industry and technology, explains why this photo was created by the means of photogram, the process of using a partially-transparent object with photogenic paper and harsh lighting to create a negative, as it is a highly technological process which creates a highly toned image afterwards, fitting his philosophy of construcivitism and belief of mixing art with technology and industry.

Connotations

In the image we see the underside of a length of tape on a dark background, created through the process of photograms.

How Does It Relate to My Work?

Laszlo Moholy-Nagy's photogram work reltates to my own because his work incorporates the theme Circles and Curves. He also uses everyday object to create his work, like i am with paper.

Resaerch;
Josef Sudek

Josef Sude was a still-life photographer who used everyday objects, such as; eggs, bread and glasses of water to create strong images.

What I am to Achieve;

Using what i know on Josef Sudek i plan to take a series of still life photographs using raspberries, as leant with shooting with fruit from my previous shoot, and a glass ( with water ), life Josef Sudek.

Best Images;

These aremy best imagaes as; theyre are all in focus, with some having depth blur, and have vibrant reds from the strawberries, with lighting that workds and isnt ttoo overpowering.

Images that require improvement;

This image requires imrpovement because it is slightky out of focus, but also as the background shows too much. To correct thiua next time i will use manual mode and be more precautionary when shooting.

This image requires improvement because it is out of focus and over exposed. To fic this in the nect shoot i will use the zoom ring effectivly when using manual mode and use a shorter shutter speed.

This image requires improvement because the image is too dark. To correct this next time i must use the lighting more effectively and/or make sure flash is set up properly.

AO3; Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress

My idea for photographing Circles and Curves was to use the natural form of fruits such as raspberries and manmade objects with form and curves like wine glasses. I was inspired by the work of Yayoi Kasuma as she uses circles in a regular lattice and bright bold colours to create mesmerising and eye catching abstract work. Her use of sed bold colours and cirles inspired me to use raspberries as she have a strong red hue.

Progression

Progressing on from this shoot i have done research on additional artists like Man Ray and have decided to shoot abstract shots of close up paper to show curves by accentuating the tones in the image.
